Water assets, aquifers and borehole safety
Map water without expensive sensors.
Sensors are expensive, so we use GIS, Google Earth Engine and Python instead: mapping boreholes, pans and dams, modelling likely aquifer zones from geology, terrain and rainfall, and monitoring boreholes for water-safety risks such as flooding and nearby contamination sources.
The problem
Planners lack a reliable picture of where water is, and which sources are safe.
What we built
- 1
Consolidate borehole, water pan and dam records into one cleaned, anonymised layer.
- 2
Model likely groundwater zones from geology, slope, drainage and CHIRPS rainfall.
- 3
Flag sources inside flood zones or near contamination risks such as latrines and dumpsites.
- 4
Share results as maps and a simple dashboard for water officers.
Highlights
- Low-cost alternative to sensor networks
- Combines official records with satellite and terrain data
- Built with privacy in mind: no names or phone numbers in published data
Built with
- QGIS
- Google Earth Engine
- Python
- CHIRPS
- SRTM
Honest status: Work in progress. Aquifer zones are indicative and need hydrogeological confirmation.
TovuTech, in progress.
