Rangeland health and livestock migration routes

Plans that follow how herders actually move.

With local development partners, we combine satellite vegetation indices, water points and community mapping to monitor rangeland condition and map seasonal livestock migration routes, so grazing plans and investments follow how herders actually move.

The problem

Grazing pressure and route conflicts rise when pasture and water are unevenly mapped.

What we built

  1. 1

Track pasture condition through the seasons with vegetation indices.

  2. 2

Map routes and resting points with herders through participatory GIS.

  3. 3

Overlay water points, markets and conflict hotspots.

  4. 4

Give partners maps they can use for grazing plans and investment decisions.
